A $300 example
If the private-party price is $300, a local Facebook sale is modeled near $291 with no seller fee. An eBay ask near $324 pays about $43 in fees and leaves $281. Mercari at $315 leaves about $283 after a 10% selling fee. Shipping comes out of those nets.
Marketplace by marketplace
The same item does not net the same cash on every site. Percent fees punish higher prices. Flat fees punish cheaper ones.
- Facebook Marketplace: ask about $291, fee about $0, you keep about $291. Local pickup is free to list. Shipped orders add a selling fee, so this column is the local cash price.
- OfferUp: ask about $285, fee about $0, you keep about $285. Local sales are free. A shipped sale adds a service fee on top of the price shown here.
- eBay: ask about $324, fee about $43, you keep about $281. Most electronics pay about 13.25% final value fee plus a small per-order fee. Sellers usually ask more to cover it.
- Swappa: ask about $309, fee about $15, you keep about $294. Swappa charges sellers a flat fee on many devices and checks the IMEI or serial before the sale.
- Mercari: ask about $315, fee about $32, you keep about $283. About a 10% selling fee, plus payment processing that is not in this fee column.
- Back Market: ask about $342, fee about $34, you keep about $308. Refurbished stock with a warranty usually asks more than a private sale. Seller commission is about 10%.
- Amazon: ask about $348, fee about $52, you keep about $296. Amazon Renewed referral fees are often around 15% by category, and the asking price includes a warranty premium.
- Etsy: ask about $309, fee about $20, you keep about $289. About a 6.5% transaction fee plus a small listing fee. Electronics inventory is thinner than vintage and handmade.
- Vinted: ask about $279, fee about $0, you keep about $279. Sellers pay no fee. Buyers pay a protection fee, so asking prices sit a bit under other shipped sites.
When local beats shipped
On a every major marketplace, local cash wins when the item is heavy, fragile, or easy to test in person, and when the fee gap is larger than the extra buyers you would reach online. Shipped wins when local offers stall under $291 and an eBay net of $281 is still more than those offers after the box and the label.
- Subtract shipping and packaging before you compare nets.
- A free local listing that takes two weeks is not free if you needed the cash Friday.
- Cross-list only if you can take the other listing down the moment one sells.
